Three routes to Sabarimala (0929 North 7706 East)

The Erumeli route
The Erumeli route, used by Ayyappan himself during his forest expedition to kill Mahishi. The Erumeli route is the most arduous and the pilgrims cover about 61 km on foot through forest and hill track.

The Vandiperiyar route
The Vandiperiyar route starts at 94.4 km stone on the Kotayam - Kumili road. The Sannidhanam is about 12.8 km from here.

The Chalakayam route
The Chalakayam route is the easiest of all. Chalakayam is near Pampa river. Sannidhanam is just 12 km from here.

Before taking the vows for the pilgrimage, seeking the permission and the blessing of the parents is a must.

The devotees undertaking the pilgrimage for the first time (called 'Kanni Ayyappan') should seek the guidance of a senior Guruswamy

The Vritam (vow) should be observed for at least 45 to 48 days before ascending the sacred 18 steps to the sanctum sanctorum (sannidhanam) of Sabarimala. The Vritam is very simple and easily observable. The devotees shall try to be pure in all the 3 aspects - Kaaya (Physical) Vaacha (Speech) and Manasa (Mental) and obey the Guruswamy always. Strict celibacy, repeated chanting of the 'taaraka mantram' ie SWAMIYE SARANAM AYYAPPA, conditions the body for the trek through the Sabari hills. Utmost devotion, honesty and unfliching faith in His ultimate grace, abstinence from alcohol and non-vegetarian food, are the other prerequisites. During Deeksha, the devotees shall be in black or saffron clothes, remain unshaven, wear Tulsi or Rudraksha mala. The sacred mala should be worn in the presence of a Guruswamy. If unable, then place mala at the altar, chant "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa" thrice and then wear. Once you wear the mala, ensure you observe full Vritam. The devotees shall participate in Bhajans, pooja etc. Devotion alone is the surest and simplest way to take one nearer to the Almighty.

Malikapurathamma Temple
Malikappurathamma Devi temple alias Malikapuram Temple is situated on a small hill just 100 meters away from Sabarimala. According to legend, Malikapuram temple is the place where the demon Mahishi rests in eternal wait. The temple complex houses the shrines of the Devi and Kaduthaswamy and also the the shrines of the snake god, Nagaraja and goddess, Nagayakshi. Here coconuts are offered only after rolling them on the ground. On the way to the temple, there is a temple tank called as Bhasma Kulam where the devotees can take a holy bath in memory of the tapaswini Sabari, who had committed her mortal life by entering the fire. After this incident the hill was named Sabarimala.

Achankovil Dharmasastha Temple
Achencoil alias Achankovil is an important pilgrim centre in Pathanamthitta district located 40kms from Nilambur. Believed to be consecrated by Lord Parasurama, the Dharmasastha temple here, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa attracts pilgrims from Kerala and Tamilnadu through out the year specially during the Sabarimala season. This ancient temple is located amidst dense forests of Kandamala, where the God is said to have given 'Darshan' to a worshipper who entered into a long term penance. Here the idol of the main deity, Ayyappa is called Rudraksha Shila. The two important festivals of this temple are Mandala Pooja (December-January) and the festival held at 'Ravathi' (January-February).

The temple is also famous for snake bite treatment. The sandal paste in the hands of the idol of Dharma Sasta is believed to have miraculous cure for snake toxin. Apart from applying this paste on the bitten area, the victims are offered the water from the temple well by the chief priest. The famous Achankovil river flows by this temple

With the blessing of our Guru's, family, and friends , We will be leaving for our annual Ayyappan Pilgrimage this Thursday ( 26^th Nov 2009 ).Our flight will departure at 6.20am and arrived at Thiruvendrum Kerala at 7.50am. 10 of us will be going in our Pilgrimage journey. 9 will be going for Sabarimala Ayyappan Pilgrimage, expect my wife, she will be joining us on our Pilgrimage journey to few other temples in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra after our Ayyappan Pilgrimage.

We are expected to leave to Sabarimala from Swamiji's Krishnar Temple in Varkala about 9 pm to Sabari Mala on the same day.By 27th Morning we will be at Bamba and start our journey to Sabarimala from there.

Today is my 42nd day of my Ayyappan Fasting.I have 6 days more to complete my 48 Days of my Virutham. It is a beautiful journey of Ayyappan fasting. Attending Ayyappan Pooja is another beautiful experience which i have never felt before. I only wear black clothes and observe a strict period of fasting and abstinence before embarking on my pilgrimage to the infamous Sabarimalai temple

I would like to thank our beloved Guru, The Holiness Late Swamiji Krishnan Sreedharan, Gurusami Maniam Sami , Malikapuratama Manoranjitham Auntie and my family members who were very supportive during my fasting and many thanks for all guidance and they are main reason of me to Ayyapan Pilgrimage.

Rituals at the Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa temple began today with the Chief priest performing a host of poojas.

Heavy rush of devotees from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh were witnessed at the sanctum sanctorum when the Lord Ayappa temple opened last evening for the two-month Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season. Elaborate arrangements have been made by the Travancore Devaswom Board administering the hill shrine and various government departments for the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage season. The rituals began with the Chief priest Kandararu Maheswararu performing the 'Ashtadravya Ganapati' homam followed by 'Ashtabhishekom' and 'Neyyabhishekom' (ghee offering). About three crore devotees are expected to trek the holy hillock during the season, additional chief secretary, K Jayakumar, who is the Special Commissioner for Sabarimala. He said a buffer stock of 19 lakh cans of Aravana prasadasm (a sweet delicacy) were prepared and production of appam started few days back. The work of roofing of 'Nadappanthal' (a pandal) on the northern side of Sannidhanam (sanctum sanctorum) was completed.Self-contained toilet blocks were provided at various points along the Pampa-Marakkoottam trekking path, besides resting places at Appachimedu and Sabaripeethom, TDB chief engineer K Ravikumar said. The health department opened dispensaries at Pampa and Sannidhanam. His Holiness Swami Krishnan Sreedharan left his mortal coil and attained “Samadhi” on Wednesday, 24th December 2008 at his birthplace Edava, Venkulam, Varkalan, Kerala, India.

His Holiness was laid to rest at his Temple/Residence Complex “Sri Krishna Bawan” on Friday, 26th December 2008 alongside with his loving wife who left the world 50 days earlier on Wednesday, 5th November 2008.

The Memorial Service dedicated to His Holiness will be held on Friday, 9th January 2009 at 7.30 pm. at Om Hari Vighnesvara Sabai, 90 Jalan Amal 25/68, Taman Sri Muda, Sek 25, Shah Alam, Selangor.

Another Memorial Service will also be held on Sunday, 1st February 2009 at 12.00 Noon at Om Sri Krishna Swami Sabai , Lot 21383 Jalan Mambau, Port Dickson, Mukim Rantau 70300 Seremban, Negeri Sembilan.

Both the Sabai’s are the legacy left behind by His Holiness to continue his teachings.

Followers of His Holiness are cordially invited to attend the Memorial Services.

The life of the man can be improved and re-energized by performing Tapas or austerity. Tapas may be performed in body, speech and mind as per 'Gita'. When man applies himself to these three components, he changes for the better.

Given below are the austerities and regulations that has to be strictly followed for taking pilgrimage to Shri Sabarimala:

The vritham has to be undertaken after getting permission from parents. Then one has to get the permission of the the Guru. After this the date is fixed to commence the vritham. The previous day before the said date one has to offer prayers to ones family deity and make a holy knot with yellow cloth with 1.25 currency units within and present it to the family deity, thereby taking Her/His permission to commence the vritham.

Previous day before starting the vritham, the devotee willcleanly shave, clip his nails, trim his hair and make himself physically clean. The holy mala / garland (tulsi / uthradsham) should be cleaned and smeared with sandal paste and placed before the portrait of Lord Ayyappa. The devotee should also buy a new pair of coloured (black, blue, saffron) dhoti and towel/shawl

On the day of starting the vritham the devotee shall raise early, bath and offer prayers to family deity, Navagrahas and perform pooja to the holy mala. Then he shall go to temple with his Guru. The mala has to be received from the Guru in midst of chanting of Saranam. After wearing the mala the devotee becomes Lord Ayyappa himself and starts the demands of pious life

The devotee shall withdraw from all social activities and spend his time by taking part in praying, poojas, bajans, visiting temples, cleaning temples, feeding the poor, helping the poor/sick and attending religious discourses.

He shall take only satvic foods and refrain 100% from taking meat, intoxicating drinks / drugs, chewing betel leaves and from smoking.

He shall bathe twice, if possible thrice, daily and perform pooja by at least chanting 108 Ayyappan Saranam. He shall continuously chant Saranam Ayyappa in mind, both at work and at home.

He shall not hurt anybody verbally or physically.

He shall treat all co-devotees as Lord Ayyappan himself and serve them in all the ways.

He shall not feel proud of the respect and privileges he gets when he is wearing the holy mala. When others prostrate themselves on his feet he shall not feel proud but dedicate the same to Lord Ayyappan and say aloud 'Lord Save everybody for their faith in you'.

He shall not cause inconvenience to his family members on account on observing the vritham.

As he starts his vritham every year, he shall think that he is doing the same for first time and follow all the rules of the vritham strictly.

He shall strictly follow brahmacharya (continence), refrain from sex, thinking of sex, develop passion against all women including his wife, and treat all women with motherly feeling.

He shall not apply oil to his hair and shall not take bath with oil smeared over his body.

He shall not attend any social function like birthdays, engagement, and wedding, etc. and shall feast in anyone's home who have not undertaken the vritham.

He shall avoid being in the proximity of dead body and shall not eat anything till he bathes if he accidentally sees one.

He shall always carry a tulsi leaf with him to prevent him from evil feeling and from Thitu.

He shall not sleep on bed but on floor, he shall not use pillow but wooden block, he shall not use footwear but walk with bear feet.

He shall totally surrender himself to Lord Ayyappa.

One should remember that the grace and power of Sabarimala increases and reflects back by observing the above rules strictly

Built on a plateau about 40 feet high, the Ayyappan temple commands a lofty view of the mountains and valleys all around. The ancient temple has been rebuilt after a fire in 1950, consisting of a sanctum sanctorum with a copper-plated roof and four golden finials at the top, two mandapams, the belikalpura which houses the altar,
and the flag-staff Replacing the earlier stone image of the deity is a beautiful idol of Ayyappa in panchaloha, an alloy of five metals, about one and a half feet tall.
There are several explanations regarding the significance of the Patinettampadi, but in all of them, the emphasis is on the number 18. One popular belief is that the first 5 steps signify the five indriyas or senses, the next 8 the ragas, the next 3 the gunas, followed by vidya and avidya. Crossing these would take the devotee closer to self-realisation.

Originally it was granite stone of 5 to 6 feet wide. Now it is covered by panchloha in the year 1985. The steep steps are so important and holy, no one can climb them without fasting for 41 days and carrying the holy irrumudi on head.
There are many mythology associated with the holy Patinettampadi. Some believe the eighteen steps denotes the 18 puranas. Some say that 18 weapons with which Lord Ayyappa destroyed the evil denotes the 18 steps. Others are of the belief that the first five steps denotes the indriyas (eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin). The next eight steps signifies the ragas (tatwa, kama, krodha,
moha, lobha, madha, matsraya, and ahamkara. The next three steps signifies the gunas (satwa, rajas and thamas). The seventeenth and the eighteenth denotes vidhya and ignorance.The Patinettampadi can be used only twice - once for ascending the temple and once for descending below leaving the hill. Before ascending or descending the steps, pilgrims break coconut as an offering to the steps. One needs to have the sacre Irumudi on head while going up or down the 18 steps. While descending the steps the devotees climb down backwards facing the sanctum sanctorum. One who climbs the Patinettampadi for 18 times shall plant a sapling of coconut in Sabarimala.

It is said that chanting the name of the Guru is equivalent to chanting the name of Lord Shiva, Guru's abode is Kashi Shetram and water used to wash Guru's feet is Ganga.

The role of the Guru is significant in the Ayyappa cult. The Guruswamy is usually an elderly person who has undertaken pilgrimage to Sabarimala not less than seven consecutive years in the traditional long route and had darshan of Makara Jothi. The devotees treat the Guruswamy as Ayyappan himself. It is important that pilgrims gain knowledge from the Guru on all the aspect of the Pilgrimage. One should serve the Guru physically, mentally and verbally.The pilgrims should give the due respect and reverence the Guru deserves. All instructions of the Guru should be carried out without fail. The Guru will enlighten the Shisyas the austerities to be followed. He will teach them the slokas and way to perform pooja and bhajans. He shall prepare them for the pilgrimage mentally and physically. He will lead the pilgrims safely and comfortably to Sabarimala
